Conclusion

In conclusion I think that throughout my project I have shown many different ways change can be seen. In some ways change can be see as good or bad for example when Truman from The Truman Show changes his life and leaves the studio its a good thing but in my novel All fall down change seems to have a bad outcome when Sunny tries to kill herself and her children. I think within all the examples I've given I have seen that humans do what we think is best at the time and we try to change to fit our environment. Its in our nature. Without change everything would stay the same and we would all get bored. There would be no improvements in our lives. If you had a bad life you would always have a bad life without change. Without change we would all still be cave men, there would be no phones or computers or electricity all together. My studies have made me realize that I should embrace change with open arms and try to make the best of it. It also made me realize that we as people need change to continue living life to the fullest.

I'm Gonna Make A Change,
For Once In My Life
It's Gonna Feel Real Good,
Gonna Make A Difference
Gonna Make It Right . . .

"Man in the Mirror"
The lyrics above are the lyrics to "Man in the Mirror" by Michael Jackson. In the lyrics he is showing how he is changing by choice. He is changing for other people that he doesn't even know. He is going to try and make a difference for people that he has never met. This shows that anyone can change how they think even if they are famous. The song shows that you just have to look at yourself then look at all the people around you and decide what is best for everyone. Change is good in this song it is good for him and the people around him.

The Truman Show

The Truman Show is a great example of extremely hard change. Any time he wants to change something about his life people on the show stop him and continue to try and get him back into the oblivious state he was once in. For example when he is trying to change where he lives people are telling him to stay that its so much better in his little town, there isn't anything out there he wants to see anyway. This shows that when you want to change there will be many obstacle's in your way. People will try and stop you and you will start to believe them as well. This movie also shows that once you push through the hard times you will change yourself into the person you want to be and you will be happy.

Summary of The Truman Show

The Truman show was made in 1998. It is a man named Truman who works as a business man and has lived in the same place his entire life. Really he is on a 24 hour television show that has been airing his whole life with out him knowing. Everyone that he knows is an actor his parents, best friend and wife. As he grows up he wants to leave his home town and explore what else there is out there for him to see but everyone is trying to stop him. Every time he try's to leave the town something happens that restricts him to town life a chemical leak outside of town that forces him back in. He starts to figure out what is going on and what's to change it. He sneaks out of his house and takes his boat all the way to the end of the ocean which is really the end of the set. He takes one look back and changes his life walking out the door.
Pursuit of Happiness
The Pursuit of happiness shows change for other people. When Chris and his family fall into hard times his wife leaves him and his son to move to New York. Chris try's his very best to find money to live with his son. He gets himself an intership at a brokers office. He continues to change his way of looking at things so his son will look at things positively. He changed how fast he worked and how many people he called. At the end of the intership he gets the job and becomes a rich man but only because he tried to change the situation him and his son were in.

Summary of Pursuit of Happiness

Chris Gardner and his wife and son fall into hard times. Chris runs around the city to different hospitals trying to sell them x-ray scanners. His wife leaves him and his son and moves to New York to try and get a new start for herself. Chris meets Jay Twistle in a cab ride and impresses him by solving his rubix cube for him in a incredibly short amount of time. He offers him a chance to a have an intership at his brokers office. Chris goes in everyday he is supposed to but doesn't look like he should be there. He works extremely hard to get the job and he does. In the end it says that Chris becomes a successful man and owns his own brokerage firm.

Poems

The 'Poem A Day' Project - Day 46

I changed my hair I changed my style
I changed my look I changed my smile
I changed my hat to suit the fad
I changed the clothing that I had
I changed my diet and my routine
I changed into a fitness machine
I changed my lifestyle I changed my physic
I changed from welcoming to quiet and meek
I changed my character and changed my friends
I changed the way the story ends
I changed the goals and sights I’d see
I changed everything that made me me

I changed my mind I changed direction

I changed how I viewed my reflection
I changed right back to how I began
Exactly the same but a completely changed man

Quotes

“Things change. And friends leave. Life doesn't stop for anybody.”
― Stephen ChboskyThe Perks of Being a Wallflower
This quote by Stephen Chbosky is about how you cant stay the same forever. No matter how hard you try if you don't change everybody and everything else will be. This quote made me realize that change happens to everyone whether they want it to or not. It shows that sometimes you cant choose to change you just do and you might not even notice. Life wont slow down and wait for you because you said "hold on I'm not ready" it goes on day after day.

“The world as we have created it is a process of our thinking. It cannot be changed without changing our thinking.”
― Albert Einstein
This quote said by Albert Einstein shows that the world was created from change and we cant make it any better if we don't change again too. It shows that good and bad things can come out of change. For example the world has only come so far because we change the way we think but it cant go any further if we don't change again on what we think. Good things that come out of change in my novel All fall down are that Sunny's children Happy, Peace and Bliss all get a new start a chance a good life. Another good thing is that her mother changed how she saw the cult. Some bad things that came out of change in my novel were that Sunny's mother told her to leave she could have gone with her which would have made it much easier for Sunny. Another bad outcome from change is when Sunny tries to poison herself and her children because it was too much change for her at once.

“For what it’s worth: it’s never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There’s no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you’re proud of. If you find that you’re not, I hope you have the courage to start all over again.”
― Eric RothThe Curious Case of Benjamin Button screenplay
This quote says that its never too late to change. You can change yourself, who's around you, your situation etc when ever you think fit. You could be ten and realize that your friends aren't very nice or you could be eighty and realize the same thing and both times you can change it. In my novel All fall down Sunny is only nineteen when she has to change but her mother is much older than that when she changed her mind and made Sunny leave with her children so they weren't hurt.

“Stepping onto a brand-new path is difficult, but not more difficult than remaining in a situation, which is not nurturing to the whole woman.”

― Maya Angelou
This quote by Maya Angelou relates to my story extremely well I believe. I think she is saying two different things. The first thing being that change may be on of the hardest things you will ever have to do in your life. It wont happen easy or fast all of the time but you have to push through it. The second thing she is saying is that even though its difficult to move on with your life its even worse to stay where you are and continue living the way you are. Just like in my novel All fall down Sunny must leave and that is very hard for her, she can barley manage it, it would have been much worse if she had stayed in the cult. She would have had to kill herself and her children.

Short Fiction Study

The short story All the years of her life by Morley Callaghan is about a young man named Alfred who works at a pharmacy and gets caught stealing. The store owner calls his mother and says he will be telling the police. When his mother arrives she does the opposite of what he expects, he expects her to come in screaming at him or crying and begging with the owner of the store but instead she comes in very level headed. She even smiled at her son who had been in this predicament before many times. At the end of the story he sees his mom in the kitchen and she looks old, he realizes he cant keep doing this to her. He changes his thought about his mother, he sees now that he must grow up and stop the way he is acting. He realizes that she is stronger than he thought but she cant keep it up forever.
In All fall down and All the years of her life Sunny and Alfred both realize they must change how they act for the better of the people around them and themselves. The son realizes her must change his ways for his mother because she cant keep going on the way she is. She is ready to stop and slow down and not have to worry about her middle child getting into trouble. In the end of the novel Sunny realizes she must change and make herself better for her children.
The story All the years of her life by Morley Callaghan shows different sides of change. One side of change is good and one isn't good. The way Alfred first sees his mom is much different than in the end. In the beginning he saw her as a mother who would beg and embarrass herself as much as possible just to keep her son out of trouble. In the end he changes the way he sees her and begins to see her as an old lady who cant continue to get out of bed late at night and save her son from getting in trouble. This is the bad change he starts to see his mom as incapable. The good change is that he now realizes that he must step up and start acting like a grown up. He has to start taking care of his mother now instead of her constantly watching over him.

Journal Response

Most people say "never change" and "to be yourself" but in Sunny's situation, changing was the only thing that could have stopped her from trying to commit suicide. Its human nature to adapt to your situations. For Sunny that was very difficult for she had been living in a cult her whole life and is now supposed to forget what they taught her so vigorously and learn new morals. "Tears burned her lids; she closed her eyes tight to keep them from slipping out. No crying, even without anyone to see and make a report."(47) The cult leaders had taught her that things we find normal even to make us feel better was wrong. Every one in the cult would report each other and if you were reported you were sent to a small dark room to sit in your own filth and silence. In the novel I am using, Sunny would never let her children watch television but now that she lives with her father and step mother she must change her ways. Her step mother Liesel must also change because she has always wanted children but her husband Christopher, Sunny's dad had never wanted them and never knew that he had a daughter. Liesel wanted to start a family, she didn't want to raise Chirstopher's 19 year old daughter along with her three young kids. She must change the way she does things and incorporate the kids into her life. Liesel must change the way she thinks Sunny's kids should be raised and listen to Sunny's decisions. Liesel also puts away her thoughts on modern things and listens to what Sunny says and even starts to use some of the things that the cult taught Sunny like how not to waste. The way I see change in All fall down is that change is something that happens all the time that we all have to cope with. Change in our lives can be for the better or for worse. In the novel All fall down it just happens to be for the better. When Sunny tries to change she is actually changing the way her kids will grow up, the way they will live and interact with people, she is making their life better.
